International Vulture Awareness Day at Ramat Hanadiv

International Vulture Awareness Day at Ramat Hanadiv

Saturday, 3 September 2016

Though vultures are unlikely to appear on anyone's list of All-time Favourite Birds, they are in fact a vital part of the world's ecosystem.  International Vulture Awareness Day will be observed this September, as it is every year, around the world, in order to raise awareness of the global dangers facing these important birds of prey. In Israel, hunting, poisoning, and electrocution have taken a lethal toll of their population, and the number of vultures that make their nests here has seriously diminished in recent years.

To highlight the urgent need for vulture conservation, Ramat Hanadiv will host, on Saturday, 3 September, a variety of activities for the entire family including a guided tour to the vultures' acclimatization cage in the Nature Park. The cage houses a core group of breeding vultures which for one reason or another are unable to survive in nature. However, their chicks can be released into the wild, where they will ultimately hatch their own offspring and strengthen the entire vulture population.
The public is invited to join us for the Vulture Awareness Day activities: a guided tour to the vultures' cage, a lecture, and creative workshops on the subject. Visitors can also enjoy the exhibit of magnificent vulture 'portraits' on display at Ramat Hanadiv's InfoShop.  David Rezek, the  photographer who created these images, will be on hand to tell some behind-the-scenes stories about the work involved in capturing vultures on camera.

9 a.m.    Guided tour begins
10 a.m.-1 p.m.  Creativity workshops
12 Noon  Lecture

There is no charge for any of the activities, but advance registration is required for the tour. For details, please ring: 04 629 8111.
