The Biblical Hebrew phrase 'al kanfei nesharim', often translated into English as 'on the wings of eagles', in fact refers to the griffon vulture, a bird of prey and an endangered species. The king of the vulture clan, the griffon vulture is the subject of the exhibition before you.
Serious numbers of these birds have been lost in Israel in recent years due to poisoning or electrocution, or by hunters killing for sport. To remedy this situation, the country's Nature and Parks Authority, the Israel Electric Corp., and SPNI (the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel) joined forces to sponsor 'Spreading their Wings', a project
aimed at renewing the vulture population in Israel.
Ramat Hanadiv contributes to this effort by maintaining a special breeding enclosure inside the Nature Park, where a nucleus of griffon vultures has been established for eventual release into nature.
David Rezek , a guide and sworn nature enthusiast, photographs birds, flowers and wild animals in his spare time. He made these images in the past few years while working for Ramat Hanadiv and the Nature and Parks Authority of Israel. The photos on display here were taken in the Carmel Nature Reserve.
Exhibit Opening: 4 March 2016, in the presence of the photographer.
