Tumbleweed onion

Tumbleweed onion

Tumbleweed onion (Allium schubertii), a plant of rare beauty and distribution
Tumbleweed onion is a rare plant of magnificent beauty; due to its unique flowering it has been nicknamed “the fireworks plant”.
In Israel it is classified as a rare plant under threat of extinction, as it grows in only ten sites throughout the country. Ramat Hanadiv is one of those sites, and to our great joy, it is the one with the largest population.
The population at Ramat Hanadiv grows in a field cultivated by traditional methods, i.e. the field is shallow-plowed and no fertilizers or herbicides are applied. According to expert opinion, this cultivation method supports the massive growth of the tumbleweed onion population at Ramat Hanadiv.
Recently a team from the Volcani Center began an interesting study on this plant. Their aim is to develop tumbleweed onion as a pot plant, so that in the future farmers will be able to grow it for sale as a pot plant in nurseries, just as the Persian cyclamen was developed for sale as a pot plant.
    Information and directions to the tumbleweed onion site at Ramat Hanadiv – the field is located west of the Memorial Gardens, to the south of the green trail.
For detailed information during your visit you may approach the staff of the InfoShop in the Visitors Pavilion.
